Indians in Oman drop significantly, Bangladesh nationals remain largest expat community

MUSCAT : The number of Indian expats living in Oman has significantly dropped by the end of February 2021. According to the latest data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), there are now 491,427 Indians living in Oman.

Despite the drop, Bangladesh nationals continue to be the largest expat community in the country with a total 546,615 workers and their dependents residing in the Sultanate. Pakistani expats are the third largest community with a total population of 182,885.

“During the pandemic since May last year, many Indians have made use of the repatriation efforts to return home,” an official speaking to The Arabian Stories said. Oman’s total population by end of February 2021 reached 4,496,419 with 2,746,571 Omanis and 1,749,848 expats.

Meanwhile, more than 45,000 expats with expired work permits took the benefit of exit scheme announced by the Ministry of Labour. In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry said over 65,000 have registered for the scheme that ends on March 31.
