MUSCAT: The decision to increase expat work permit fees in Oman this year will help to regulate and fight hidden trade, a top Ministry of Labour official said on Sunday.
His Excellency Sheikh Nasr bin Amer Al Hosani, Undersecretary of Ministry of Labour confirmed that the government will go-ahead with its plan to increase the work permit fees in specified categories and jobs that includes leadership and supervisory positions, technical and specialized jobs, in addition to small and medium enterprises.
Al Hosni’s statement comes during a meeting with members of the Youth and Human Resources Committee of the Shura Council. He has informed the Council that the decision is taken in the interest of Omani citizens as it gives them the opportunity to compete in the leadership and supervisory positions in private institutions. “It will also provide facilities for small and medium enterprises, regulate the labor market, and fight hidden trade,” he added.

Companies will have to pay up to OMR2,001 to employ a foreign national in a senior role, while the fee for the recruitment of a foreign national in a mid-level role will cost OMR1,001.
