MUSCAT: Academic qualifications will not be a deciding factor for setting wages for Omanis, Ministry of Labour said in an internal circular.
On September 21, Sheikh Nasr Al Hosni, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Labour for Labour issued a circular cancelling the minimum wage for citizens linked to academic degree. However, the general minimum wage of OMR 325 is mandatory regardless of the degree. A copy of the circular is available with The Arabian Stories.
This is part of the government’s plans to revamp the labour market. “This is a welcome move from the government. Now you don’t need your academic degree to dictate the wage,” said Mohammed Al Balushi who works with a private sector company.

Last week, the Ministry said all new recruits should register their work contract details on the government website.
The terms of the contract include salary and bonuses which has to be agreed by the employer and employee without the interference of the ministry. “After registration, a notification will be sent to the candidate to accept or reject the contract,” the statement said.
According to the Ministry, the parties should commit themselves to the minimum wage that has been stipulated in the Omani Labour Law.
