MUSCAT: Among the 17 private sector companies that terminated several Omani employees recently, 13 have agreed to drop the decision and reinstate its staff following a high-level meeting at the Ministry of Manpower on Tuesday.

A meeting was held with these companies in the presence of His Excellency Hamad bin Khamis Al-Amri, undersecretary of the Ministry of Manpower for Labour Affairs, during which 13 companies decided to cancel their proposal to lay-off Omani staff.

Most of the companies in the country are in the process of reducing their operational expenses in the wake of coronavirus (Covid-19) crisis.

However, speaking to The Arabian Stories, a top Ministry of Manpower official said that the decision to terminate the Omani workforce is a clear violation of the Supreme Committee’s decision. “We have asked the remaining four companies to look into the issue and revoke their decision. This is a clear violation of the Supreme Committee’s decision,” he said.

According to him, an employer has to give three-months notice before ending the services with an Omani employee. “We are hopeful of a positive decision,” he added. The meeting was also held in the presence of officials from Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry and General Union of Oman Workers.
