Voters gear up for Oman’s Majlis Al Shura elections

More than 700,000 people will go to polls on October 27.

Muscat: As many as 713,335 Omanis will go to polls on Sunday, according to the statistics provided by Ministry of Interior. 

The number has soared compared to 2015 Shura election when there were only 611,906 voters in the 2015 Shura election. 

“This shows the excitement among the Onani voters for the upcoming election,” said Ali Al Rahbi, a resident staying in Al Khuwair. 

Among voters, 375,801 are males and 337,534 are females. Electors are choosing from 767 candidates who are vying for 85 seats in the Majlis Al Shura, according to the Ministry of Interior.

This year, there are 43 female candidates and 724 male candidates contending seats.

For the first time, electronic voting machines will be used for the election.

The machine consists of a touch screen, in which the procedures and steps of the election are determined, so that the voter can choose his candidate easily.

Meanwhile, all government schools in the Sultanate will be closed on October 27 due to the elections.
