Oman’s Sohar Port and Freezone has agreed to allocate land for the development of solar parks that will supply electricity to companies within the Sultanate’s free zone.

Sohar Port and Freezone has signed a land lease agreement with Shell Development Oman (SDO), according to which it will provide 600 ha (1,483 acres) of land of the photovoltaic (PV) projects. The plants will have capacities ranging between 10 MW and 40 MW, the partners said in a statement this weekend.

The pioneering project will be of 25 MW and will deliver electricity to ferrochrome smelter Al Tamman Indsil Ferrochrome LLC (ATIFC). Details about the other projects were not provided.

“Sustainability is one of our key values in driving development at SOHAR and this partnership with Shell will create solar-powered solutions that are the first-of-its-kind in the country,” said Mark Geilenkirchen, CEO of SOHAR Port and Freezone.
