Muscat – The Wilayat of Mahut, within the Al Wusta Governorate, is a captivating blend of various natural terrains, each offering a unique spectacle. Tourist attractions abound, with the picturesque “Bar Al Hikman” earning the moniker “the Maldives of Oman.” Mahut boasts several islands, including the historically significant Mahut Island, Ibb Island, and Ma’awal Island, each with its charm.

Mangrove trees grace the islands and beaches, while Ghaf trees dot the desert areas and valleys, adding to the region’s ecological diversity. Notably, Sultan Qaboos University researchers uncovered a meteorite crater with a diameter of approximately one kilometre, estimated to be around 60 million years old, adding a touch of cosmic history to Mahut’s landscape.

Beyond its natural allure, Mahut is a hub of economic activity. Abundant in oil, mineral wealth, and marine resources like shrimp, the region supports Omani craftsmen engaged in traditional trades such as textile, wickerwork, and leather. The Wilayat also hosts festivals celebrating its vibrant culture, including camel racing and competitions.

Governor Sheikh Humaid bin Dhahir Al-Bathari highlights the government’s commitment to Mahut’s development. Numerous projects have been undertaken, including internal roads, lighting, slaughterhouses, gardens, and parks. Last year, the tender for the fishing port in Al Khalouf was issued, a vital project set to benefit fishermen and boost the fishing sector. Furthermore, plans are underway for the construction of a new Mahut Hospital.
