Mandatory health insurance for expat workers in Oman after 3 years: SPL

The long awaited mandatory health insurance for expatriate workers to be implemented after three years under the new Social Protection Law

Muscat: The Royal Decree No. 52/2023, promulgating the Social Protection Law, provides for the implementation of the provisions of the Work Injuries and Occupational Diseases Insurance for expatriate workers, after three years from the date of its issuance.

As per the recent population statistics, there are 1,784,736 expatriates in the country, with a total of 1,406,925 individuals occupied in the private sector and 44,236 in the government. The provisions of the clause on insurance against work-related injuries and occupational diseases will benefit expatriate employees in the private and public sector.

Categories covered under the Work Injuries and Occupational Diseases Insurance comprise all Omanis working in the Sultanate of Oman and compulsorily covers non-Omani workers working in the Sultanate of Oman according to the categories for which a decision will be issued by the Board of Directors of Social Protection.

Coverage for self-employed Omanis will be decided by the Board of Directors of the Social Protection Fund.

The provisions of this section do not apply to Omanis working for their own account, working for part-time, working in the countries of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, and Omanis working abroad.

Entitlements of the Work Injuries and Occupational Diseases Insurance Branch:

  1. Work interruption allowances
  2. Lump sum compensation (one lump sum compensation)
  3. Permanent partial disability pension
  4. Permanent Total Disability or Occupational Death Pension
