Have you ever thought about giving dry brushing a try?

Well then, what is dry brushing?

Dry brushing is a wellness and skincare practice that involves brushing the skin with a firm, natural-bristle brush while the skin is dry — typically before showering.

  • It’s the act of gently brushing the skin (usually toward the heart) with a dry, stiff-bristled brush.
  • Usually done in long, upward strokes, starting from the feet and working your way up.
  • Followed by a shower or bath, then moisturising with oil.

Benefits of Dry Brushing

While not all benefits are clinically proven, many people report the following positive effects:

1. Exfoliation

  • Removes dead skin cells, revealing smoother, softer skin.
  • Helps prevent clogged pores and ingrown hairs.

2. Improved Circulation

  • Stimulates blood flow, which may give the skin a healthy, temporary glow.

3. Lymphatic Drainage Support

  • May help stimulate the lymphatic system, encouraging the movement of lymph fluid to aid in detoxification.

4. Cellulite Appearance

  • Some users report a temporary reduction in the appearance of cellulite, due to improved circulation and skin plumping.

5. Stress Relief

  • The ritualistic aspect of dry brushing can be calming and meditative.
  • The physical stimulation can feel invigorating and soothing.

6. Energising Effect

  • Many people find dry brushing in the morning helps wake them up, thanks to increased circulation and tactile stimulation.

 Cautions and Considerations

  • Avoid on broken, sensitive, sunburned, or inflamed skin.
  • Don’t brush too hard — gentle pressure is best.
  • Always moisturise after, as dry brushing can dehydrate the skin.
  • Start 2–3 times a week; daily brushing is optional once your skin adjusts.

How to Dry Brush: Basic Steps

  1. Choose a natural bristle brush (with or without a long handle).
  2. Start at your feet, brushing upward in long strokes.
  3. Move to your arms, brushing toward the chest.
  4. Use circular motions on the abdomen and joints.
  5. Shower afterward to wash away exfoliated skin.
  6. Apply a moisturiser or body oil to rehydrate.
