The passion for camping among Omanis is not new. The campsite is a haven where they relax and enjoy peace and quietude. The clear sky with twinkling sparkling stars and the tranquility away from the hustle and bustle of the city, contributes to a feeling of mental clarity. But…the camping experience is not complete without this famous meal.

So, let us learn how to cook Mashakik or Madhbi.

To prepare this delicious meal, most people either grind the meat first or insert the meat that has been cut in small cubes, into slender Mishakik made of palm wood or some local trees known to Omanis, so that the length of each of them does not exceed between 30 – 40 centimetres.

However, before the pieces of meat are inserted, spices/seasonings such as cinnamon, cardamom, garlic, salt, cinnamon, black pepper, and other available spices are added.

Then the firewood – usually from the Samar tree – is ignited. And when the firewood turns into red embers, the grilling session begins. The dish is usually accompanied by a special sauce, which is tamarind base; this makes meat tender.

The option of eating it with or without bread is totally up to you.
