Arab Open University, Oman bags TRC Funding on COVID-19 research

Muscat: Arab Open University (AOU), Oman received The Research Council (TRC) funding on COVID-19 research as part of the TRC’s COVID-19 Research Program. Dr. Sherimon P.C., Faculty of Computer Studies is the Principal Investigator (PI) of the research.

Out of the total 442 research proposals received, the proposal submitted by Dr. Sherimon and team came in the list of top 20 applications approved in the non-clinical category.  

COVID-19 Research Program is a new initiative launched by The Research Council (TRC) in the background of the pandemic. Experts from several Research Institutes in Oman constitutes the Steering Committee of this Research Program. The main objective of this program is to support and guide research projects to focus on conducting relevant, high quality, realistic, short-term, applied research in multidisciplinary areas related to COVID-19 global pandemic.

The main objective of the proposed research is to develop an Artificial Intelligence based (Ontology) Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) for the treatment of COVID-19 with the adoption of video conferencing facility. With this, medical practitioners at primary health centres / Satellite Clinics of the Royal Oman Police will be able to manage the patients as per the recommendations of the proposed intelligent CDSS with expert support through the teleconferencing system integrated in the CDSS from the Central Hospital.

This proposed study is a collaborative effort by researchers of Arab Open University, Higher College of Technology, and medical doctors from Royal Oman Police (ROP) hospital. The project team includes Dr.Abdul Malik Al Kharusi, Director General, Directorate of Medical Services, Royal Oman Police Hospital,  Dr. Sherimon P.C, Faculty of Computer Studies, Arab Open University, Dr.Renchi Mathew, Senior Consultant Physician, Royal Oman Police Hospital,  Dr.Sandeep M  Kumar, Emergency Physician, Royal Oman Police Hospital, Dr. Huda Salim Al Shuaily, Head of IT Department, Higher College of Technology, and Dr.Vinu Sherimon, Faculty of IT, Higher College of Technology.
